Yesterday saw Rachel teaching bus about the ancient Galilean town of Sephoris (aka Zippori) in the theater. In 37BC Herod captured it without a fight in a snow storm while consolidating his victory over Antigonus and settling the boot of Rome onto the necks of the Jewish people. In 67AD it surrendered to Vespasian without a fight, the largest town in the Galilee leaving Jotapa to fight it out in the distance at Rachel’s back. Here Jesus almost certainly practiced his carpentry (aka stonework) in rebuilding the city with his father after its destruction in 6AD. And here lies the Mona Lisa of Sephoris you’ll have to come see yourself...
On Mount Carmel Sam Gust regales is with a tale he’s known since Sunday School, Elijah’s defeat of the Prophets of Ball in the power of the One True God triumphing over the idol worship of the day.
